Maintaining a backing, or support, for yourself is a tricky concept. You cannot promise much if you want to remain true to yourself, and on the other hand, you cannot say, "Choose me, and then we'll see if I can do anything." Maintaining a balance between these two extreme possibilities is not just anyone's cup of tea, which is what brings down the stronghold of even the most successful of individuals or parties.
Let's take up the case of an individual.
You may remember the example from "Anger and Flying Hands". Well, it blew itself out of proportion with some recent developments. Anyway, The 'ambler' in that example received support from a few of the subject's (remember? The flying hand belonged to the subject) friends, for what happened to him. In a world of irrationalities, let's just say that those friends had to hear an earful for the backing they provided. Anyhow, this backing went to his head, to put it blatantly. He thought, voicing some unneeded, opinionated statements wouldn't affect the support he got. Even so, it did. As a consequence, his rep did fall down a little and (indirectly) assisted the subject in avoiding a sticky situation.
Now, let's take a look at the case of a party.
The Marxist group in Bengal is losing support thick and fast. One of the reasons for this happening is: they kept promising stuff they couldn't deliver. The Roman(like) mob may have taken time to realize their inaction, but as of this moment, they have started to look for an alternative. This spells danger for the power of the group and it's reign of 35 odd (pun intended) years.
(and) Since I was damn serious for the whole of the article, I guess I deserve to lighten up. So, on the other side of the post, let's shed light on the lighter side (all of us are capable of lame alliterations, aren't we?) of 'the prime sources of trouble'. "The parents of problems come in plenty of packages; but the most 'efficient' are the ones that come in skirts." (Go on, save this quote,it's a Sam original!)
